Radiator fan not working?

My radiator fan will not come on when engine gets hot. The fan comes on with the a/c. I have changed the relay and the cooling temp sensor. I think the only other thing is to change is the radiator fan switch. My question is how do I change this. What do I have to take off to get to it. My car is a 92 firebird 305 tbi. Please help and if there is any other thing to check please let me know.Radiator fan not working?
If yourun direct voltage via a jumper wire from thebattery to the fan motor, the fan should come on. Are you sure you got a good relay? Have you checked the entire cooling system, to see if there were any other problems, as you swapped out the coolant sensor which will tell the fans when to kick on and off. Is your thermostat ok, water pump weeping any coolant out of the weep hole, flushed your coolant system at all, emissions systems ok,ie: catalytic converter not partially plugged. The switch for the coolant is essentially the fan relay that you already replaced Check all of your grounds in that circuit, make sure they are clean and tight, because if you areputting battery voltage right to the fan motor and the fan is kicking on,then look at the aforementioned suggestions and eventually you will get to the source of your problem. That relay sounds like it's only doing half of it's job. Good Luck.Radiator fan not working?
you best bet is to go to the parts store and buy the manual for your car. Haynes manual has some really good pics and instructions on how to tear your car apart down to the frame. I have a chiltons but I use the haynes manual more.

Go and get one for your car. they are handy to have and a very good read if you like that stuff.Radiator fan not working?
That car has two temp sensors, one on the top front of the intake manifold near the upper rad hose with 2 wires, a yellow and a black. It also has a sensor on one of the heads, between two of the spark plugs, with a single green wire. The one with the single green wire is for the gauge ONLY. The one with the yellow/black wires is for the ECM and this is the one that controls the fan (indirectly).

The computer (ECM) itself sends out the ground signal to energize the fan relay. This signal is sent out at approximately 220*, based on the reading from the main temp sensor (yellow/black wires). If the sensor is new, and the ecm is ok, then there could be a wiring problem, or coolant circulation problem.

Also make sure the cooling system is full. The main sensor is in the top of the engine, and if the coolant is low, no coolant will flow past the sensor, and it will always register cooler than it should.Radiator fan not working?
you can toggle switch it or wire it directly to the battery. maybe even wire it to your ignition so when the key turns on so the fan.

  • How do you convert a 98 Sunfire to a cavalier?

I want to convert my 98 Sunfire front end into a cavalier front end. I thought I would just have to change around the radiator support, fenders, hood, lights, and front bumper. I was just wondering if I was correct.

I also found a shaved trunk for a 95-99 cavalier and figured it would fit my 2 door Sunfire. Just wanted to make sure.

Websites would be appreciated for shaved trunks!.

Thanks. How do you convert a 98 Sunfire to a cavalier?
What would really look hot is if you installed the front end of a 1983 ford escort. How do you convert a 98 Sunfire to a cavalier?
you are correct for the front end. but if you have a coupe, the trunk from a coupe sunfire will not work... only sedan to sedan. you may also have to deal with rewiring the headlights... depending on what year you have and what year front end you are going too.

98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn't come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?

I HAVE CHANGED THERMOSTATS, CHANGED FAN RELAY, FLUSHED RADIATOR,CHANGED ENGINE TEMP SENSOR FIRST THING. ONLY HEATS UP ON EXTENDED IDLE OR IN SLOW CITY TRAFFIC. COOLS OFF ON THE HIGHWAY. HOW DO I GET THE COOLING FAN TO COME ON SOONER?98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
If it isn't in the red, then your engine is not over heating. It's operating as designed, there is nothing wrong with your car. It is a clutchless fan motor for that car.

A way to turn the fan on in most cars is to turn the a/c on for about 5 seconds then turn it back off. The fan turns on in most vehicles and will run a normal cycle (90, 120 seconds, in some cars more, in some cars less) because the a/c system creates additional heat that needs to dissipate.98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
I'm pretty sure they use the same temp as Corvettes, 220f, but you can actually have it changed at a shop to 180 or possibly something inbetween.98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
you probably wont believe this but try putting on a new radiator cap.98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
    That's normal.

The fan is %26quot;just in case%26quot; you get stuck in traffic, and it's working just like it should.98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
Hi,The fan it self is bad .It is a clutch type operation that engages automaticly. It is probably slipping, thats why it is going on late.I think you might be able to install your self ,but make sure system is off before working on it, I could be wrong so check out first, safety.Good Luck98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
on some cars, like Ford, you can turn on the fan anytime by turning on the AC or Defroster, try it98 SUNFIRE Cooling fan doesn%26039;t come on til almost in the yellow caution zone. What temp should it come on at?
most GM cars the fan comes on at 220 degrees and if you turn the air on it should come on right away.

    Car problems please help!?

Ok where do i begin. My car has been overheating, today i drove it a good 30 miles before it started to overheat. Ive checked the radiator, changed the thermostat, checked all the hoses, and everything seems fine. so i took it to pep boys and they performed a %26quot;blop%26quot; test (not sure what the test is really called). any way they told me that if the liquid changes color that it means that coolant and oil are mixed together and that it probably means that i have a blown gasket. and sure enough when they performed that test the liquid changed color and they told me that there is no pressure. well i drove it home and no overheating. my questions is this,

1.)How does coolant mixing with oil damage the engine?

2.)The car performs well, except for the overheating. What can i expect in the future?

3.)I know this problem is expensive to fix but is there an alternative to changing the engine? Anything Please!!!!!!!!!!!

4.) Can this problem be fixed at home? (Obviously with someone that has experience with fixing cars)

Thanks to anyone that helps answer my question.Car problems please help!?
1.) The engine can not compress water. Oil and water don't mix. Water will breakdown oil thus busted motor

2.) Excessive overheating will ruin you engine

3.) If head gasket is blown, just change it

4.) Yes can be done at home. Get a repair manual at autozoneCar problems please help!?
WHAT TYPE OF ENGINE? IF ITS A HEAD GASKET IT CAN BE REPLACED AT HOME ,BUT YOU STILL MIGHT HAVE A CRACKED BLOCK OR HEAD. A HEAT DAMAGED ENGINE CAN BE VERY COSTLY IN MANY AREAS. GOOD LUCKCar problems please help!?
well it could be a blown head gasket or if you drove it very long over heating it can warp the heads or crack the block but oil and coolant should not mix because not because its dangerous but because something isn't right if water is getting into your oil that means your engine is not getting enough lubricant if your engine isn't getting enough lubricant then your going to start busting your connection rods then your crank will definitly need to be replaced if it gets a flat spot and then talk about some money problems so save your trouble replace the head gasket and while you have the heads off have them checked to make sure they are not warped you didn't mention what kind of car you have so i couldn't tell you the difficulty of doing it

I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?

    It's really 3 issues.

    1. The car makes a grinding noise, like a pencil in a pencil sharpener or a card in spokes when I go above 40mph. The only thing is it's not consistant. If you think of the accelerater peddle like a scale of 0%-100%, then after 40mph it makes the noise between 0%-10% then runs smoth from 10%-20%, then grinds at 20%-30%, then after that it makes no noise no matter how far I push the accelerater down. It only does it above 40mph, and almost litterally the grinding shuts off when it drops below 40mph. The sound appears to be comming from the engine and I can feel a vibration the foot pedal.

    2. The car makes a rattling noise occassionally, when initially accelerating, like metal smacking but in a rattling manor. If I allow the car to idle in park and rev the engine to approx. 3000/rpms then in makes the noise continuesly (but only in park or nutral) Also on occasions I hear the noise when turning the wheel at slow speeds. I've looked under the hood, and it seems like the noise is either comming from behind the engine, or under it. I do not hear the noise when

I am driving unless, it is related to issue one, but they seem like seperate noises.

    3. The last thing, I believe I may know, but just to be sure. The vehicle seems like it is struggling to stay alive when idle or stopped at at light/sign. It's worse in park or nutral, but not as bad in drive. It also tends to shake (the whole car) when I am stopped, unless I put it in park or nutral at a light/sign. (This I have no clue)- Beyond that the accelerator seems to stick when initially engaging then surges forward like it recieved alot of power, and this happens not matter if I ease my foot onto the pedal or not. Also when I make a stop it does fine all the way till I am almost compltly stopped, then it almost seems like the tires lock, but it jerks foward everytime (only at complete stops, not slowing down).

    Some vehicle info-

    1991 Ford Excort 1.9L wagon.

65k Odometer (but turns over at 100k so could be 165k)

So far we've changed the oil, flushed the radiator, changed the air filter, and changed the fuel pump. We tried changing the CV joints, only to pull them off and find them in new condition. Also, not pertinent, we have rotated the tires.

Not sure what it is, I have heard a ton of suggestions, none being consistent. I also took it to AutoZone for a free diagnostic, and he said it read fine. I am not eager to jump to a mechanic, just to pay a ton only to figure out the problem. I don't mind going to one, but would like to know the problem first, so I know what to expect. Also, if it's a few small things it would be great to just take care of them myself. ThanksI am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
You said if you %26quot;allow the car to idle in park and rev the engine to approximately 3000 rpms then it makes the noise continuously.%26quot; That is a very revealing clue which isolates the grinding noise to a part which is moving while the car is stationary and not in motion. The first things I would suspect are the a/c clutch bearing, the alternator bearing, or the transaxle/transmission main shaft (aka input shaft) bearing. But since you also said that you %26quot;can feel a vibration [in] the foot pedal%26quot; and that %26quot;the noise is either coming from behind the engine or under it,%26quot; I wouldn't bet a ham sandwich that the grinding/rattling noise is coming from the a/c clutch bearing or the alternator bearing. That makes the transaxle/transmission main shaft bearing my 1 suspect. But regardless of where the grinding noise is coming from, if the noise is continuous at 3000 rpm while in Park as you say, then it would be a simple matter to trace and identify using a mechanics stethoscope or a listening rod.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
extremely good description of the problem. i tend to think u have a clogged exaust system/ catalitic converter.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
Alot of mechanics will give you a free estimate and check out your car for free. make some calls and find out who can do this for you.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
Problem 1 is definitely a wheel bearing.

Problem 2 sounds like an exhaust rattle, could even be the converter broke apart and pieces are in there, or even some of that heat insulator they put on at the factory is coming loose.

Problem 3 could be a few things, a tune up may fix it, maybe try some fuel injector cleaner too, thats where I would start.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
I would think that the wheeI bearings would have been checked when the cv joints were replaced.

I think you need to inspect the motor/transmission mounts. If they are worn the engine/transaxle assembly will shift and make for weird noises and amplify small vibrations into loud ugly ones. It also allows the assembly to shift under cornering.

The surging problem sounds like a vacuum leak.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?

  • Bleeding air on a '98 Honda Accord?

I am changing the radiator hoses on a '98 4 cylinder Accord EX. I can't find any information on a fitting and where it might be located to bleed trapped air when I refill it with coolant. How do you bleed air from this model?Bleeding air on a %26039;98 Honda Accord?
I don't have anything handy on the 98, but they used to have a bleed valve on the up to '95 Accords, so it seems likely they still would. Here's pictures of the location on these earlier models. 84-89 and 90-95 respectively.

Put coolant while engine is not running filled it up all the way. When its full start the engine and filled it up again until its all full. Don't forget to put some in the reservoir tank.Bleeding air on a %26039;98 Honda Accord?
Theres no bleeder valve on those cars cause theres no reason for one.Once you get your radator filld partially. run the car till it gets warmd up also turn on the heater.once it warms up and the thermostat opens youll prob need to add more coolant.before you do this run the car at about 3000 rpm for about 30 sec.that should get any air out.then fill the rest of the way w coolantBleeding air on a %26039;98 Honda Accord?
Sometimes you'll find a bleeder valve by the thermostat housing. If not fill up the overflow container , start the engine , stand back watch it , if it goes down add more and when you see it trying to overflow the air will come out then.Be sure if you're changing the rad hoses to use to hose clamps and to clean m scrape , or sand paper the housings the hoses go onto, plus I highly recommend you check the antifreeze mixture with the proper antifreeze tester.Once you get the coolant done , drive it awhile , allow engine to cool right down then check the rad or overflow container with the antifreeze tester.I usually mix it so it can handle -40c by the way.

Hope that helps and best of luck.

Toyotas ATF Type 4 transmission fluid?

i own a 05 toyota corolla and was wondering when it says in the owners manual to use only toyota atf type 4, is that the only kind i can use. valvoline is telling me i can use there dexron/mercon type 5. also how often should i change it? valvoline is saying every 60,000 miles and also how often should i change my radiator fluid? please help toyota technicians!!Toyotas ATF Type 4 transmission fluid?
Every four years both fluids even more in dusty areas. Consult your owners hand book maintence charts. And I would use exactly what Toyota says toyota type 4 might be dextron mercon type 5?. Some toyota cars use red antifreeze specific to toyota. There again it is up to you. 2005 should not need new coolant yet. every 30,000 for a transmission drain and fill is not to much.Toyotas ATF Type 4 transmission fluid?
i learned a long time ago that when it comes to transmission fluids it's always best to go with the manufacturer. i absolutely hate buying anything from car dealers, but i made the mistake a long time ago of not using Honda ATF in my Honda transmission, and it was a mistake that cost me $2700 for a transmission rebuild after the clutches in the transmission burnt out.

transmission fluid is a very intricate thing, and something that varies widely in composition from one transmission to the next. it's gotta have the right viscosity, it's gotta allow a certain amount of slip, but not too much.... or clutches burn out.

moral of the story here, buy the toyota ATF and save yourself the worry and possible expense.

i usually change mine every 60k miles. the tranny sump, just like the engine oil sump has a drain bolt. open it up, allow the fluid to drain out, and refill to proper level with the correct ATF. some transmissions have a filter which should be changed as well, yours may not. you will need to drop the sump pan to do this, and it is a fairly straight forward procedure. if you decide to replace the filter you're gonna want to replace the sump pan gasket. the service desk at the dealership should be able to provide you with printouts from the service manual for these procedures, just ask nice....

as for the radiator flush, i do that every 2 years, regardless of mileage. as with all other things toyota has thier own version of this too, so you will need to ask the parts counter which type came in the vehicle, and replace with that kind. if you felt so inspired you could switch from toyota coolant to an over the counter type, like prestone, or dex-cool. if you wanted to do this however, you would have to COMPLETELY flush out all the current toyota coolant and then replace with the new type you wanna use. coolants are something you do not wanna mix, as this can have disasterous effects on the metals inside the cooling system and engine. this process to me is very time consuming. so i just use Toyota coolant, just makes my life easier.

don't forget to use a good quality oil and change the oil and filter about every 5K to 7K miles. as far as oil goes, just swing by the walmart and get whatever brand name is on sale. for oil filter i like purolator, pure 1, or wix, napa....

    good luck

    E34 auxillary fan not working?

My e34 520i seems to be overheating slightly, the heat gauge is showing slightly above half.I checked the belts and the front belt, i am assuming it is the aircon belt is loose.I also noticed that the auxillary fan is not working. Can this be my problem? I also need to change my radiator as one fin is leaking , the tiniest hole. There is still plenty of coolant in the expansion tank.Does anyone have pics of how to remove radiator?E34 auxillary fan not working?
this could be several things. The E32/E34 share a couple of similar things so I'll base my answer off my E32.

You should check your fuses for the fans.

Then check the coolant temp switch (mounted in the passenger's side of the radiator.) There is a way to short the pins to see if the fan will kick in.

If that doesn't work, there is a relay above the driver's side fender.

Still no go? I would check the Aux fan resistor

Make sure to get the same temperature thermostat and a new gasket or O ring when you buy it. Remember which way the thermostat sits on the engine block when you remove it. You might want to change that upper radiator hose at the same time. Buy some worm drive hose clamps too.How to chage a mazda 626 thermostat?

remove the housing, make sure you put the thermostat back in the same way up as the old one was with a new 'o' ring. If it still pressurises and blows water out you are looking at at least a new cylinder head gasket or water pump.

The noise stopped before i got to the garage when the fan stopped - the car didnt overheat. The garage changed the rad, but now say the fan doesnt work. How much are fans? would i need to change/buy a whole assembly or can you get bits like temperature sensors and fan motors. I have a 96 Saturn, SL1, 4 door... I bought it used two years ago and so far I had no problems until recently It started to overheat.

So i took it to my mechanic for a check up and he changed the radiator cap, thermostat and the sensor switch on the fan...it does not overheat to the max but it does not keep in cool temperature either. When driving in the city and highway, the gauge goes past the half mark (which in the past, it went just past the quarter mark) it bothers me because if I was to sit in traffic that gauge would not stay it would go to the red mark and heat up, my mechanic says that it's fine and it's suppose to do that, but I know my car and I know how far the temperature gauge should be... Any suggestions on what else to check for?

could it be the radiator or the water pump. should I get a pressure check on the cooling sysytem? Any suggestions is greately appreciated.Car overheating and not running like before?
change your radiator fluidCar overheating and not running like before?
Your mechanic should have pressure tested it before he replaced all those components. If they all check out and it's verifies you have no other issues (head gasket) it may be time for a new radiator. If you have been lax on your cooling system maintenance there could be debris in there.Car overheating and not running like before?
Yes get that thing rechecked and don't ever take your car to a mechanic that tells you it's normal for the temp to go into the red.

You mentioned all the possibilities, it could also be the radiator is partially clogged. I had that with two saturns. Don't know why but they seem to get that way.

Get some references on a reliable place to take it. Sounds like you already given that guy too much of your moeny for nothing.Car overheating and not running like before?
Yes, it could be the radiator or many other things, but first have your mechanic scan the vehicles computer and verify that the temperature gauge is reading correct and also check if the cooling fans are coming on when requested.

If the computer reading meets the manufactures specs then the gauge or sensor is bad, if is does not then it is possible that the radiator is clogged up.Car overheating and not running like before?
you probably have nothing to worry about so long as when the temp gauge gets to the middle it stops and goes no further. your vehicle may have come with a 190 degree thermostat and the mechanic put in a 210 degree...which is ok, but obviously the temp gauge will go up further than it used to. if the gauge is fluctuating or keeps rising, check the coolant level when the vehicle is cooled down and make sure that is is full.Car overheating and not running like before?
You have a partially plugged up radiator. Have it checked and see if I am not right. I went through the same thing with a Ford Ranger and the Dealership replaced the thermostat, radiator cap, water pump, fan impeller, etc. Finally they pulled the six month old radiator and had it repaired and the problem went away. I sued and got back $700.00 in un needed repairs.Car overheating and not running like before?
the first (and cheapest ) thing to try is replace thermostat (again) just because it is a new one does not mean that its goodCar overheating and not running like before?

An 11 year old radiator is pretty old, Changes are yours is pretty clogged and scaled up. A new one doesn't cost too much.

Color Silicone Hose , Where and How?

I'm trying to change my radiator hoses on my motorcycle to a yellow color. I've seen pictures of a few people doing it.

I know a few websites where I can order the hoses yellow and for the make/model of my bike but it cost wayyy to much (samco)

Anyone know of any other websites that sell colored silicone hoses for motorcycles ?

Or possible a way to color a silicone hose ?

The ONLY way you are going to be able to change the color of coolant hoses is to use colored sleeving. Go to any automotive performance center, they can sell you nylon braid sleeving kits, they come in several different colors.

1987 Ford Bronco II 2.9 Liter V6 overheats?

I have a 1987 Ford Bronco II 2.9 Liter that had 100,000 mile on it. The Truck runs hot and sometimes over heats. I have flushed the Radiator, changed thermostat from 195 degree to 180 degree not much help. How can I tell if it is head gasket, water pump or radiator.1987 Ford Bronco II 2.9 Liter V6 overheats?
Check your fan clutch first. with engine off, spin the fan with gentle pressure. the blade should move no more than a quarter ways. if it moves freely with no resistance, there's probably your problem. if it doesn't rotate at all, fan clutch is bad also. if head gasket is bad, you will see water on the oil dipstick and oil floating in the radiator.

With engine on and running, get engine hot. turn engine off and feel around radiator. you're looking for cold spots. any cold spot is potentially a plug in the core.

your water pump will squeal if it's going out, OR it'll start dripping from the bottom portion, which means the seals are giving out. I doubt its any of these. My vote is for the fan clutch.1987 Ford Bronco II 2.9 Liter V6 overheats?
A leaking head gasket will make the car miss, and water will be in the Oil-and you will be using water, Gray looking-oil Water pump should have a drip if its worn out-bearing- is there an A/C coil in front of the Radiator-

Have you ever had overheating problems with your 1998 Subaru Outback Legacy 2.5?

I changed the thermostat, I flushed out the radiator, I changed the radiator cap, proper amount of antifreeze and water, and still has a problem.

I have realized that it only overheats when it's low on water, so it's overfilling the reservoir and spilling out until it gets low and overheats.

I tried sodium silicate and that didn't solve it. I even bought another thermostat incase the 1st one was defective, and I even broke apart a thermostat so there was no restriction, but still I have a problem.

Seems to loose water even when it doesn't overheat, it just over heats when it looses too much.

I bought new water pump and it's all metal, so I don't see how it can be a bad water pump, the water pump isn't leaking.

I haven't put the new one in yet. But I don't know if that will solve the problem.

What do you think, what could be wrong?Have you ever had overheating problems with your 1998 Subaru Outback Legacy 2.5?
If you put the thermostat in wrong you can get an air bubble. This won't allow the water to flow to cool the engine and could lead to blown head gasket, cracked block problems. new motor ... EXPENSIVE!! Make sure you let the car warm up first before you fill with water whenever you change the thermostst.Have you ever had overheating problems with your 1998 Subaru Outback Legacy 2.5?
Just when did you have your engine serviced?

It could be that the problem is not so much the water pump but timing. This does not mean just spark timing but also includes valve timing.

There is also the possibility that some one told you they replaced the plugs, but didn't resulting in a poor burn that is causing the over heating. Saw this once on a dealer serviced car- only one plug had been replaced, the other 3 were shot. If you have ever done plugs on this engine you can understand why.Have you ever had overheating problems with your 1998 Subaru Outback Legacy 2.5?
I have never had a problem with overheating, but then again I don't own one.

Why is my 94 civic running hot? And how do I test a radiator fan motor? Someone please help!!!?

I have a 94 honda civic dx. I went to myrtle beach about a month ago and on the way home my car overheated. I changed the radiator/radiator cap/reservoir cap because my friend who sold me the car told me it needed to be replaced. The car still over heats. I read the Mechanic manual for my car and it says it shouldn't be my thermostat if my hoses are warm/hot, and my hoses are hot. Its like when I drive the car, the car heats up to normal temperature normally and then the anti-freeze evaporates or something... The ant-freeze doesn't stay in the reservoir. I checked and the coolant isn't leaking... it just disappears, I don't know what to do anymore. The only option I can think of is the fan, because I have never (I mean never) heard the fan come on the whole time I have owned the car (about a year now). But then again I have never heard the fan come on and I don't understand why it would cause the car to overheat if it wasn't working before. I'm frustrated and considering selling it, but I love the car because I have plans to fix it up. Can anyone give me a resolution? Also can someone tell me how to test the radiator fan battery? My manual says to connect my car battery to the fan motor...I don't have any idea how to connect that without killing myself. If you have pictures or a website link I would deeply appreciate it.Why is my 94 civic running hot? And how do I test a radiator fan motor? Someone please help!!!?
You can't electrocute yourself with a car battery so don't even worry about it. The fan motor has a connector with two wires connect one to positive connect one to negative...see if it turns...easy.

But if you said you are losing coolant and you are not leaking it out that would indicate a more serious problem such as a head gasket (rare on a Honda) do you see white smoke out of your tailpipe when you drive? Why is my 94 civic running hot? And how do I test a radiator fan motor? Someone please help!!!?
Try www.hondatuningmagazine.com, some good how to's and editorials, and some great articles for when you're ready to customize. Why is my 94 civic running hot? And how do I test a radiator fan motor? Someone please help!!!?
My friend when your car overheats there are a few checks that you should carry out. First you should check your thermostat if it works then check your water pump to see whether it circulates the water. In your case your car has a fan switch which is located in the hose outlet and when the car reaches certain temperature the switch comes on and starts the fan and cools the engine. The person who advised you to connect the fan to the battery is only checking whether the fan works and in that case your fan is O.K. but you should change the fan switch if it works on direct battery. You should also check whether your radiator is clogged and this is a very easy to test.

i have a 95 chevy blazer that i recently changed the radiator but not the cap i used my old cap from my old radiator. i think that might be my problem but im not too sure. this morning i found some coolant that was leaking into the inside of my truck what can cause this to happen? and how could i fix the problem? How would i fix a coolant leak that has?
You have a leaking heater core or a leaking heater hose or connection. You may have to remove some of the internal dash panel to gain access. I would check the hoses first to make sure they are OK, but while you are in there, change the hoses anyway on one this old. Good luck. How would i fix a coolant leak that has?
That would be your heater core.... you need to get a new one. It is leaking inside into your vehicle. How would i fix a coolant leak that has?
First you need to find the source of the problem. Run the engine, goose the throttle on the throttle body and see if you can find the source of the drips.

I'd be looking at radiator hoses or the cap since you said you just replaced the radiator. Or, you could automatically eliminate the cap as a problem if you go ahead and replace it.

Edit: Oops, %26quot;inside%26quot; as in the cabin or %26quot;inside%26quot; as in the engine bay? If its the cabin then its the heater core. Not too expensive but it can be hard to replace depending on how the dash is designed. How would i fix a coolant leak that has?

How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?

i have changed the radiator, and my lexus es300 92 continues to overheat. they have changed a few other things, and nothing seems to work. how do i know if its the fan clutch. i do know that the fan stops if i place an object on it to stop it, should it do that? How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
You may want to stop by a repair shop that specializes in Toyotas/Lexus' ,,,talk with them and get an idea.

I dont think your car has a fan clutch.

You should have an ELECTRIC FAN that is controlled by a lil' %26quot;mini-computer box%26quot; instead of just a simple Temp Sensor%26amp; Relay set-up.

An Electric Fan will typically blow approximately 35~40MPH type airflow.

To put your hand 6'' or so Behind the fan Should feel similar to sticking your hand out the window while driving 40mph.

The Temperature of the %26quot;breeze%26quot; from the fan Should be Unbearably Hot.

    It's a 200*F,, 40mph Wind.

You should NOT be able to stop the fan when Car is at full Temp %26amp; IF fan is at full speed.

Weak Electric Fan Motor---Rare,but it happens.

They are usually either Good or Bad.

Faulty Fan Control ECU---far more likely.

It COULD be failing to switch from Cold Start mode to Hi-Temp/Hi Speed Fan mode???

Loose or Broken Fan Blade--this is NOT unusual on a wide variety of electric fans.

The Mechanical Connection between the actual Fan Blade and the Electric Motor Shaft may be faulty.

The Fan Blade Hub can break,,,or the retainer/tightening nut comes loose,,,or whatever.

Ok,,the Blade WILL Turn,,,and Appears to be Working.

But it SLIPS and cannot pull enough air thru the radiator.

The General Symptoms are SIMILAR to a bad fanclutch,

but the actual fault causing the symptoms is different. How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
With the engine off and at a relatively cool temperature (e.g. when you've not recently been running the engine), attempt to spin the fan by hand. It should spin freely because when the engine's off and cool, the clutch should be disengaged.

You might also run the engine and observe the fan. After the engine idles for a few minutes, your fan should %26quot;kick on%26quot; and start turning. If it doesn't turn on within 5 or 10 minutes (assuming it's relatively warm outside), you probably need a fan clutch. If it does turn on, pay attention to the fan and watch to see whether it %26quot;wobbles.%26quot; Sometimes, even if a fan does occasionally turn, the clutch can wear-- this might affect the efficiency of the fan which could contribute to (but likely not cause all by itself) your overheating.

This could also be a matter of your water pump, but those usually fail in the %26quot;open%26quot; position, so if anything a failed water pump on a relatively modern car will result in an engine that doesn't want to get up to operating temperature. If by some freak occurance your water pump failed in the %26quot;closed%26quot; position, that could cause overheating.

If this car hasn't had regular coolant flushes throughout its lifetime (at least at 100,000 miles and then every 50,000 thereafter), I'll echo what others have said and urge you to get to a radiator shop. Have it checked out, and if your radiator is physically okay, have the shop do a complete service on it.How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
well if its not working while your car is hot and its not working um yes replace it what could you loose and could also be your thermostat not working telling your car that its a different temp then what it really is if that dosent help run it into a tree and get a new one just kiddingHow do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
NEVER replace any part 'till you KNOW the problem. Go to a RADIATOR SHOP and get the radiator cleaned. How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
If the fan fails to turn on when it gets hot, it needs to be replaced. How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
if you grab it and spin it with your hand and it spins freely it needs replacing

How to change an accord radiator (96)?

drain the coolant, take the hoses off, take the fans off, take the trans. cooler lines off, (if its an auto) %26amp; take the radiator out...

How do I remove the hose on my transmission line?

I had to cut the hose because the quick disconnect on the radiator was faulty (I'm changing the radiator). Now I need to remove the remnants of the cut hose so I can put a new one on. sounds like the secondary cooling fan is not turning on. Pop the hood, and have someone apply gas in the parked position(make sure to put the parking brake on). ask them to stop applying gas. If the secondary fan does not turn on withing 30 seconds, then that's the problem. Most of the time this can be fixed just by cleaning the contacts and putting the fan back in. But if it is the fan, the most you should be out is about 70 bucks. When i drive my hot and cold needle keep going up and down.when i stop the needle goes up.?

Yes your car is crazy, no it sounds like the ground wire on you sensor probe could be loose. When i drive my hot and cold needle keep going up and down.when i stop the needle goes up.?
could be a bad thermostat. just cause its new or recently new doesn't mean its still good. seen brand new parts fail instantly many a times.

otherwise sounds like a electrical problem between radiator and gage or even a faulty gage. if it bounces, then most likely electrical. if it goes up n down slow, smooth, then most likely thermostat again, or even could of been the wrong thermostat installed or even worse, put in upside down. When i drive my hot and cold needle keep going up and down.when i stop the needle goes up.?
You might want to check the thermostat. This is the radiator's sensor for you to know how hot it is. If it is old, or your old radiator overheated before you changed it for a new one, it may be damaged. Check that first. Also check to see if you have enough coolant IN the radiator. When i drive my hot and cold needle keep going up and down.when i stop the needle goes up.?
I'd go for a bad fan sensor or relay first, Radiator fins bent not allow enough air flow, a/c fan is working when moving but at stops it's not enough to keep things cool. With the a/c on and the engine warm both the a/c and engine fans should be running. If when they put in the thermostat they used sealant, the wrong kind and too much it could have melted off and be jamming the new thermostat.

  • How much do you think it would cost to have these parts replaced?

Car needs some items replaced, so going to get a new water pump, thermostat, timing belt, servicing belt, alternator belt, and all the gaskets for them. Also getting the oil changed and radiator flushed, guy said he'd do it for $650, you think that's fair?

Cars a 1993 ford probe gt 2.5L V6.How much do you think it would cost to have these parts replaced?
hmmm. you should only need one belt(10). and one timing chain(20). water pump/gasket wont be to cheap(150,10)), t stat should be cheap(20), oil change easy(20), inexpensive and radiator fluch not to bad (40). im thinking around:

300$ in parts (if that), and maybe(?) 220$ in labor.. so if you pay him 550 cash im sure he'd be fine with it..How much do you think it would cost to have these parts replaced?
If this is the Mazda based engine, the items you need are very pricey. This IS a good deal, if the tech is using all genuine factory replacement parts, and not skimming with cheaper aftermarket parts. There is a special skill involved in completing this task correctly, but using inferior parts will compromise the longevity of the repair. Buy your own parts from the dealer, and then ask how much to install. Or, get all the receipts for where the parts came from. Good Luck!!!

Well, like others have said. Check your air filter to start with. Then look at fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires.

Also, have you changed fuels lately? Gone from Premium to Regular? Gone from Shell to Am/Pm type fuel? There is a difference you know. The cheaper the fuel, usually the worse fuel mileage you get. What might cause my car to get worse gas mileage suddenly?

I have only had foreign cars, but I have had this problem. It could be your fuel filter. It can affect the gas changes. I would have someone check the filter. get your fuel injection system checked as well as a full tune up(filter, hoses, plugs, etc.)What might cause my car to get worse gas mileage suddenly?
Here are 7 ways to improve mpg.

    1. Keep tires inflated to recommended pressure and within one pound of each other. Low tire pressure can cost 1-2 mpg.

    2. Dragging brakes can decrease fuel economy. Regular brake inspections will help you keep your car rolling and stopping.

    3. Synthetic lubricants have been proven to greatly reduce friction in engines and differentials. Reduced friction means better mileage and more power. Dirty oil can cost up to 0.5 mpg.

    4. Keep the air filter clean, or upgrade to a high-flow filter element. Add fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank every 5,000 miles to help injectors vaporize fuel properly. A dirty air filter can cost up to 2 mpg.

    5. Regular tune-ups are crucial to engine efficiency. Replace spark plug wires every 50,000 - 60,000 miles, depending on how severe your driving conditions are. A complete tune up can yield as much as 10 mpg.

    6. Acceleration requires more horsepower and uses additional fuel. The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you use. Go easy on the gas.

    7. Air conditioning is one of those parasitic losses that can be eliminated by simply turning off a switch. This is a big one usually woth 1-2 mpg.

Hope this helps!!What might cause my car to get worse gas mileage suddenly?
I basically agree with Jim but I would suggest that in addition to your regular oil changes you get the full package offered once in a while they will check everything for you that way : )What might cause my car to get worse gas mileage suddenly?
the only thing you didnt list was air filter. if your engine senses its not getting enough air it will add more gas to compensate. also if you havent changed your spark plugs and wires that could make your car get worse mileage but it would also make it lag a bit too. What might cause my car to get worse gas mileage suddenly?
Many many things! One possibility is a very dirty air filter. A bad sensor. Or even wheel bearings going bad. There are so many things it could be.What might cause my car to get worse gas mileage suddenly?
It could be an exhaust leak or if you got the car serviced at a garage they may have used the wrong parts.

It'll probably take you longer than one hour. Longer if it is automatic and has air conditioning. The Real Time Labour Guide says the job can take up to 2.5 hours. The engine's bellhousing should mate right up to the tranny in your truck. Most of the wiring ought to switch over too, including the dash wires. I don't think you'll need to switch your old instrument cluster into the new truck.

As to the computer and radiator, yeah, bring them over. I think the Turbo had a radiator with a built-in cooler for the turbo oil or something like that; whatever the case, you want to bring it over with the engine.

I'd hate to try to get the new computer to understand what was up with the old engine. Could it learn the new engine, then handle what was happening when the turbo spooled up? I doubt the programming is that flexible.

BEST METHOD IS TO TAKE SPORTS CAR TO THE DEEP OF OCEAN !!Advice on how to winterize a sports car.?
I was told by an old fellow I used to chum with that he would jack the car up off the ground and put it on blocks to keep the suspension from wearing - though he was storing the cars longer than a winter.

I would be adding some fuel stabilizer, starting the car up every couple weeks, change the oil just prior to storing it.

Found some tips on this page.Advice on how to winterize a sports car.?
Jack it up and place it on jack stands , it will take pressure off of the shocks and suspension and also keep you from getting tire rot...

Well, I was about to link you to the autozone website because they have good instructions under their Repair Info section, but the site is currently down.

Basically, remove the upper radiator hose and the lower radiator hose from the radiator. Make sure the coolant is drained first though. Then disconnect the smaller transmission fluid hoses (if applicable). These smaller hoses contain red fluid if you have an automatic. They run transmission fluid to the radiator for cooling. Then you unbolt the bolts holding the radiator to the car. You may also have to disconnect the wires that power the fans. These fans are often connected to the radiator.

For more details check the autozone website.

How do you change a radiator?

I am removing my old radiator from my bathroom and replacing it with a heated towel rail. But i don't have a clue how to take the old one out without hot water leaking everywhere some help please? How do you change a radiator?
If the new rad is not exactly the same size, you will need to drain the whole system and do some serious plumbing to connect up the pipework to the new valves. If it is exactly the same size, you can disconnect the old rad. Turn off both valves (anti-clockwise). Put receptacles and old towels underneath the valves. Carefully unscrew the nuts on either side of the rad. Make a note of the number of turns required to close the return valve. Water will start to drain out (probably very dirty water). Once it has drained away you should be able to lift the rad off its bracket and fit the new rad reversing the above procedure (wrap PTFE tape around the threads). How do you change a radiator?

Just a guess here. Turn off the water source. Have buckets at the ready. There is a valve where you can drain them. It may require a special key. I am sure Home Depot or the like has them. Also, check Howdini.com. I found some great videos on all types of things. How do you change a radiator?
    You need 2 people.

At each end are adjustable valves. Close them.

Put old towels, rags etc under radiator - you are probably going to get black (will stain a carpet) water out!

Also towels, old clothes in front of radiator for when you turn upside down, leaking water.

Wait until the radiator is cold.

Undo the nuts that go onto the radiator, they will start to weep water.

One person each end, lift the radiator up (putting your thumb over the radiator outlet hole as you lift to stop all the water coming out) and off the wall bracket.

Quickly turn the radiator upside down so all the water doesn't drain out.

Put PTFE tape around the threads of the new radiator before fitting (to stop leaks), tighten nuts, turn-on radiator with top bleed hole open. When the air stops bleeding and water comes out tighten the bleed nut!How do you change a radiator?
Luludood said it all. That is presuming the replacement item is the same size as the rad and has the same sorts of fittings.

Where to get cheap used radiator for honda civic, and how to install? also how repair leaky transmission?

    hi-

couple of issues on my honda civic that i need to fix-

first, where can i find a honda civic replacement radiator cap, and/or replacement radiator? where is the cheapest place to buy it? is it a super-involved job to change the radiator?

second, how do i repair a transmission that is leaking some fluid? i drove over some rocks that cut a few gashes in the engine and transmission. i was able to repair the engine leak with steel-reinforced epoxy, but the transmission, either i missed a puncture or two or the problem is different b/c i am still losing some transmission fluid. any tips - different compound, or better way to seal/fix?

thank you!Where to get cheap used radiator for honda civic, and how to install? also how repair leaky transmission?
not to sound crazy but what were you thinking trying to put an epoxy on it, if your oil pan was punctured you need a new one or have a welder weld it once its off. your engine builds up so much pressure it could blow your epoxy off and give you an oil leak and boom goes your motor. trust me, cheap ways to fix things are nice i know but something like that is not smart at all, it can weaken in time too and you won't know it. for your transmission it could still have a hole in the pan, it mainly depends where the leak is, clean it off real good and locate it, if its the pan too replace it. if its where a gasket is just replace a gasket, or if its between the motor and the transmission it is your transmission pump leaking on the main seal and will blow your transmission if you keep on going. and a radiator you can get at a junk yard or ebay is the best for a new one. i got an aftermarket aluminum racing one for 125 shipped so if it cracks it can be welded and it doesn't keep heat at long at the plastic. they are easy to replace too its just two top brackets usually. good luckWhere to get cheap used radiator for honda civic, and how to install? also how repair leaky transmission?
FIRST YOU CAN LOOK IN PHONE BOOK FOR A PARTS STORE LIKE PEP BOY'S / AUTO ZONE OR LOOK ONLINE FOR PARTS STORE USE INTERNET PHONE BOOK OR JUST GET PHONE BOOK ONCE YOU HAVE NUMBER TO A PARTS STORE THAT PARTS FOR CARS AND THEY WILL HELP YOU FOR FREE CALL THEM CALL SEVERAL OF THEM AND THEY CAN HELP YOU GOOD LUCK ALL WAYS TRY AND CALL AROUND FOR DIFFERENT PRICES ON FIXING YOU;R CAR ONCE YOU FIND PROBLEM OR THE PARTWhere to get cheap used radiator for honda civic, and how to install? also how repair leaky transmission?
for the radiator go to ebay there is a ton of mods and OEM parts for civics for good prices, for the tranny id advise you to take it to a shop, epoxies and all that crap is never a good fix for that. im big on fixing things the cheapest way i can but your transmission is a whole different story when it comes down to that

No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?

Just had a corgi engineer look at our combi boiler, cause we werent getting hot water or radiator wasnt heating up. I have no idea what he did to fix the problem, i wasnt at the house(my tenants were in), he was at the house for 45mins and fixed the problem and charged 拢180!!! I think ive been skanked but i dont know exactly what his done to challenge this. Anyhow he advised to change the radiator water, as it was dirty...who do i speak to carry out this service, and how much does it cost? And if i pay for annual boiler service, would this cover cleaning radiator water? No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
the invoice will tell you exactly what he did for the 拢180 pounds

for that price he must have changed a part but it could have just been something simple meaning he has ripped you off.

ignore riga mortice - balancing the system would have meant you had poor heating not complete failure of HW and CH!!! lol

a powerflush is a full days job if done properly but it may not need doing if its a combi boiler. if its a very old system and used to support a cast iron heat exchanger in the old boiler and the rads are older than the boiler then it may need doing but usualy with a combi you can get away with fitting a magnaclean (magnetic filter) to catch any loose iron particles which try to circulate back through the boiler. These small particles get caught in the restricted waterways within the combi and block everything up. if i ever come accross this type of thing i always fill a small dish up for you too see for your self -

but im not a money grabbing ****, i get paid salary so i dont benefit for lying to customers!

you can always get a 1 off service from british gas and ask them to check a water sample while they are there - if you make sure you are there on the visit then you can see for your self for piece of mind!No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
He should have flushed the system while he was there. No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
what he probably did was drained out the entire system, then added this stuff to one of them (forgot what it's called, but you can get it at homebase lol, some kind of flushing agent) and then filled the system back up.

a little expensive, but it's about rite for what was done.

i dont think you will need to do it again for about 2-5 years. No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
Report him to trading standards he hasn't flushed your system he has conned you and ripped you off by 拢180 for 5 minutes work balancing your systemNo hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
To clean the dirty water from the radiators they have to be individually flushed with a power washer (bit like a jet washer).

That is to close off the flow of water to the radiator by the valve, then disconnect the pipeline %26amp; connect the pressure washer %26amp; hence flush out with clean water.

Depending on how many radiators you have in the house it would take quite a while to do this properly,

I know because Ive done my own, I actually took out the radiators one by one %26amp; did it in the back garden !

I was getting hot water with dirty water, basically if the boilers PILOT light was lit %26amp; hot water was demanded there should be hot water.

Another reason for the radiators being cold is there could have been trapped air in the radiator, which is really easy to solve - bleed them with the key you get - a 2 min job !

Or alternatively was the temp / thermostat control set properly on each radiator %26amp; room sensor ?

The cost to clean all your radiators will be about 拢300 + as it is a relatively big job.

Do it yourself as its very easy !No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
If this is a steam system, you should be flushing the low water cutoff/auto fill valve weekly. Around here (stateside) these are MacDonnell-Miller valves. They are usually on the side of the boiler and have a sight glass to show water level with a spring loaded water valve on the bottom.

Put a 5 gallon bucket under the valve and flush until clean water flows.

This is considered periodic home owner maintenance, and if I was on the service call, I would have done a more extensive job, (as a rule) but sometimes the work load doesn't allow one the time for perfection...

If this is a hydronic system, my apologies...

TomNo hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
you can hire a flushing unit from HSS to do the job follow the manual ideally each rad needs to be flushed individually. If you are competent with basic plumbing its not difficult to powerflush the unit

as for the 拢180 there is probably a call out fee of 拢60/70 + the time he spent and material.

    http://www.hss.com/g/51610/Central-Heati

its about 4/5 hour job if done properly so 拢67+Vat + chemicals + inhibitors i would say 拢120/150 for machine and chemicals this depends on the size of the system

But only attempt this if you feel competent to do it if its not done properly you may end up with sludge being filled in the boiler itselfNo hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
Ask for a fully detailed invoice. If no hot water or heating is just to turn in line taps on to bring pressure up to one bar. Cost 拢50.00 call out fee plus VAT.No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?
British gas charge around 600 quid to do a power flush which should take between 6 and 8 hours depending on the size of system, you can usually get someone cheaper out the paper but theres no guarantee after they are finished compared to the lifetime guarantee you get with the gas board.taking the rads off and flushing with a hose is another wat but it doesn't clean the pipework or the boiler. why would you pay 180 and not even know what was done anyway

i just change one from a mark 2 mondeo, i believe they are the same.

take the bumper off to get at the two bottom rubber holders, under the holders they are metal mounts for them to sit in. these mounts are attach to the body by two bolts (i think they are 8mm). loosen them and take off the mounts. now the radiator will come out. i found taking the fan assembly off first helps. the bleeder valve is down near the bottom left mount. How to change a mondeo radiator?

There are a lot of little plastic clips holding the %26quot;bumper COVER%26quot; on, not to mention some screws, however I strongly believe this is unnecessary when changing a radiator. well to change a radiator in a honda you do not need to take off bumper or cover.actually there are a couple of screws and some hose clamps there are two screws on left and two on righ take them off at op by thehood latch.once you take them off thats basicly your radiator support onceyou take that offradiator ill slide up aftr takingoff hoses and lines.

video on how to change a honda civic 99 radiatorVideo on how to change a car radiator?
There's really no need for a video, it's very easy to do. Just turn the white knob on the bottom of the radiator, remove the radiator cap, and drain the coolant. Remove the coolant reservoir from it's bracket, and disconnect the hose attaching it to the radiator (from the radiator side). Unplug that radiator fan from the electrical connector. After the coolant stops dripping from the radiator, close off the knob, and start disconnecting the 2 large coolant hoses. When you start pulling off the hoses, more coolant is going to pour out of them, from the left over coolant in the engine. Unbolt the 2 radiator support brackets (2 bolts each), and the radiator can be pulled right up. When the radiator is out of the car, unscrew the fan from it.

Screw on the radiator fan to the new radiator. Make sure the rubber bushings are properly placed on the radiator supports, for the posts of the radiator to slide right in them. Slide the radiator into the bushings on the radiator support, and reinstall the radiator brackets on top. Attach the 2 big coolant hoses, and plug in the connector for the radiator fan. Reattach the coolant reservoir and attach the hose. Fill the radiator will coolant until it appears to be full. Start the car, and continue to fill it with coolant. When the fan kicks on (the temperature begins to rise about half way), it will suck in even more coolant. You can gently pull on the throttle to rev the engine a little to help warm it up sooner, just do it gently or coolant will fly everywhere. You can also try squeezing the big coolant hoses gently to help draw in more coolant as well as help expel air bubbles; they do start getting hot though. Fill coolant reservoir to the correct level.

When you stop seeing bubbles, and the radiator is full, take it for a short test drive. Watch the temperature and make sure it doesn't get too hot. If it starts getting hot, immediately turn around, park the car and turn it off; that will be an indication that you didn't get all the air pockets out yet. Take off the radiator cap (be careful of coolant spraying out), allow the air to escape, and refill with coolant. After a minute of 2, start it up again and let it warm up again (should be warmed up enough or close to it). Watch for more air, squeeze hoses gently, fill as needed. Repeat as needed, until no bubbles come out and the temperature is stabilized without over heating.

The hardest part will be burping the coolant system (getting the air out). But swapping out the radiator is an easy job.
