The designs are very complicated. I heard that Audi A4 require that you take off the front bumper skin and grill to change a headlight bulb and some major body parts need to be taken off to change the water pump. Is this true or at least my impression? I heard that 1980's Maserati Biturbos needed radiator removal to change the oil...very stupid design or designed by someone with no regard to costs and labor. How about Audis, particularly the A4? We just had a new radiator put in about 4 months ago and we keep checking it to make sure we have no leaks. The fluid was going down a little and we think we solved that problem by getting a new radiator cap. We live in Massachusetts and need the heat!! My question is--could it be a belt? Or maybe the water pump? Or just a thermostat? I guess i could take it to a service station and have them put it on a computer to find out, but--they charge so much and seeing xmas is right around the corner I am sort of strapped. I just had all new brakes put on and bought a new battery and also the radiator. Should we change the thermostat first and see if it's that? I'm so confused. My b/f will do the work although he isn't a mechanic but has helped others on their cars and he is pretty good. Any help will be very much appreciated and I will let Santa know how you tried to help me. HO HO HO. TYVM!!!!1999 Sable-- No Heat?
The squealing is either the Serpentine Belt Tensioner or the Idler Pulley or a combination of the two. Given that this is a 99' Sable adn I've been bit by this one before I always recommend replacing both the complete tensioner assembly and the idler pulley at the same time. Both are highly prone to failure anyway.

That is not why your vehicle has no heat though.

Assuming your coolant level is good Sable's are also notorious for literally eating thermostats. On the very first really cold day of winter I will see in my shop on average 6-7 Taurus/Sable's that have thermostats that have either just failed or have literally fallen apart. This (along with the radiator cap) should have been replaced at the same time as the radiator. If your engine temperature guage is not rising quickly or not going up to normal operating temp that is a good indicator your T-stat is the problem.

A $60 coolant flush every other year would have prevented all of this.1999 Sable-- No Heat?
I'd start with the thermostat, it's cheap enough to replace. (about 30ft I think - it is 16 years since we fitted ours ! )Once an aga has been installed?
Hi there, if the Aga can still be accessed at the rear where the pipework connections go, you should be O.K. If you look at the side and rear and see if you find the connections, that should be enough for a plumber to connect to. You will still have to get the Flow %26amp; Return connected to your existing system, and disconnect whatever was heating your radiators previously. You will also have to consider controls for the system, such as a pump on the system or gravity feed only. If it is pumped, you can use that to run your radiators and heat your hot water through an indirect cylinder coil quite efficiently.

I would first decide what I wanted, ideally. Then get 3 plumbers to quote for the work, then look at each quote and decide which is best for quality and cost. It does seem a waste to have the facility ther and not take advantage of it.

Good luck.Ferminahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13266640240866353648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4174754379925147783.post-25454158297399125792011-09-22T19:48:00.000-07:002011-09-22T19:48:03.857-07:00How do you change a water pump in a 1998 Cadillac Deville? My car is overheating sometimes and I can hear clicking when it runs, I know it might be the thermostat or radiator, but I think its the water pump. Have to take off the fan shroud, and fans. Upper and lower radiator hoses, two transmission cooling lines and hold down screws where ever they are on your car. It isn't that hard to do (depending on the car). You would save yourself a lot of money by doing it yourself. Be prepared to drain the coolant. Usually a upper and lower hose and transmission coolant lines (if your car has an automatic transmission). A few bolts. Front-wheel drive cars, you may have to remove the fans. The newer the car, the harder the job gets. Use your best judgment. Once the bubbling has stopped and the radiator is full lower the car and test drive for about ten minutes and check the levels again. What does that entail.?
If your current radiators are steam radiators (the old heavy heavy ones) like mine, you have a BOILER as your heat supply. Steam travels from the boiler to the radiators and heats them up. The returns are for the water that condenses to go back to the boiler.

To change over to a baseboard heating system, it would be hot water instead of steam, so you would not use the same central unit. It would heat the water like your water heater rather than super-heating it to steam. You could probably use a lot of your current pipe infrastructure so you wouldn't have to tear everything out between the %26quot;furnace%26quot; and the baseboards.

You're looking at about 5 thousand or less for a heating system (furnace) plus the baseboards. Installation will also be a cost factor. Your best bet is to call you local gas, oil, or electric company (whoever will be the service provider) to ask about a package. I know I should do it to get rid of rust and other forign objects but what other benefits are there? How easy is it to flush the radiator to a Honda accord engine.?
An engines cooling system should be flushed out at least every couple of years.Anti-freeze never looses it freeze protection provided no water is added but the rust and corrosion inhibitors break down and can and will cause damage in an engine. If your not comfortable doing it just have it done at a shop,it shouldn,t cost a lot of money. But if you do it yourself just open the drain plug located on the bottom of the radiator and catch the old coolant and dispose of it properly. And then open a heater hose and run clean water thru the open radiator cap until it begins to run out the heater hose.At first it will be green(the old anti-freeze) and then it will turn clear as you get out all the old anti-freeze.Then stop adding water and let it drain again until it stops. Then close the radiator drain but leave the heater hose open and held up as high as it will go.Then beginn adding the new anti-freeze,you will see water begin to come out of the open heater hose but this is good just keep adding more anti-freeze until it begins to turn green, at this time you know that you have pushed most of the plain water thru the radiator the engine block and it has now worked it,s way all the way to the heater hoses.Continue adding new anti-freeze until what comes out your heater hose looks like straight anti-freeze and then reattach the heater hose and tighten the clamp. Now top off the radiator and the coolant overflow or recovery tank and then run the engine until the thermostat opens(the top radiator hose gets hot to the touch) and make sure that the radiator is still full and then put the rad. cap back on and top off the recovery tank. Then go drive the vehicle for 5 or 10 miles and come back and recheck the level in the coolant recovery tank and top off if needed. And thats all there is to it.Also check the freeze protection, it should be good to about 20 below to be safe.Good luck. How easy is it to flush the radiator to a Honda accord engine.?
to me there is nothing better than good clean coolant in an engine. flush it as often as you like. it cannot hurt the engine as long as you replace the anti-freeze with the recommended type and amount you should be fine. flushing is easy...just open the drain plug on the bottom of radiator and run cold water through the radiator while it drains out the bottom. make sure the car is running, of course to flush the debris out of the engine block, heater core, etc.

once the water runs clear, then close the drain and refill to normal levels with coolant and water. How easy is it to flush the radiator to a Honda accord engine.?
If you just filled it, leave it be.. whats the water look like, what makes you think you need to flush? Any parts store sells a can of rad flush.. just do as it says to, make sure you remove hoses and flush out good with clean water once your done.. Firstly, the temperature that you want it to be able to maintain which is a relatively straightforward task and you can use the table below as a guide: -A huge range of radiators can be bought here and you can work out exactly what you need by using the BTU calculator on the same page

Ideal Room Temperatures (deg C)

Lounge 21

Dining Room 21

Kitchen 16

Bedrooms 15

Bathroom 23

Stairs 18

Secondly, the heat loss from your room. The calculations for this are quite complex since they depend upon the size of windows, numbers of doors and, in particular, the construction materials used in the building (Click here to calculate the 'U' values) to get an accurate radiator size. Too big and the system will overshoot its temperature and be less economical to run, to small and it won't reach its desired temperature. (Some of the poorer installers get round this complex step by putting in radiators that are to big, and then fitting thermostatic radiator valves to every radiator to cut the heat down.) This calculation produces a heat loss figure in watts, of how much heat you need to warm that room up to the design temperature from -3 deg C in one hour.

Heat and Plumb can supply: Traditional Radiators, Vertical Radiators, Low Surface Temperature Radiators, Aeon Designer Radiators, Electric Radiators, Night Storage Heaters, Automatic radiator Bleeders, Column Radiators, Cast Iron Radiators, Stelrad Radiators

A quick and easy way to calculate the size of the radiator required for any room in your house is by measuring the room in cubic feet and then applying the following factors to the figure arrived at: - To work out the exact BTU vlaue, click here for a calculator halfway fddown the page.

Lounges and dining rooms Multiply cubic feet by 5

Bedrooms Multiply cubic feet by 4

Common areas and kitchens Multiply cubic feet by 3

For rooms facing north Add 15%

For French windows Add 20%

For double glazing Deduct 10%

This will give you the output of any radiator in BTUs (British Thermal Units). Adding the total for all the rooms in your home will give you the approximate demand in BTUs for the whole house. Add 20% to the total for a hot water circulating tank and 10% for general losses. This will give you the boiler size you need for your house. Obviously these calculations are approximate and while giving you an excellent idea of the sizes you will require, it would be best to get this checked by the installer.

It is very unlikely that any radiator will match the exact heat required, so select the first size of radiator above the heat requirement. With rooms greater than 6 meters (18ft) in any one direction, it is worth considering distributing a number of radiators to minimise the thermal gradient within the room. What is the condition of the radiator? If you havent changed the fluid repeatedly then flush the radiator and change the thermostat. I am betting you may need a new radiator or are low on fluid. If the thermostat is bad it will sometimes collapse the hoses because it creates a vacuum in the radiator. This could also be a waterpump issue. These are relatively cheap, but you could spend 400- 500 on a a waterpump, new radiator, antifreeze and thermostat. My 65 mustang is overheating in a short period of driving what can be the reason?
if over a short distance you mean less than 20 miles it is probably one of the the following 1 the thermostat is stuck 2 the radiator is dirty 3 the water pump is inop. quick and dirty testing with te engine cold make sure the radiator is full look at the belts and (WITH THE ENGINE OFF KEY IN POCKET) check to see if the belt that goes over the pulley in the middle (the one the fan is on) is tight tighten or replace if needed then ok thru the front of the car and see if the fins are blocked with debris/dirt ok next start the eng and very carefully check the upper radiator hose (squeeze it) as the engine warms up the thermostat will not allow water thru the hose until it reaches a certain temp ie most motors of that era are 180-185 rev the motor the hose should try to push your fingers apart if you dont feel any water pressure - like a garden hose- then replace the thermostat about $10 and easy to DIY if not fixed find someone who knows motors and get there help or take it to a shop to have it tested - cheaper than buying a new motor-other things that can cause this lean fuel condition, defective exhaust, incooerct valve/ignition timing etc how this helps GLMy 65 mustang is overheating in a short period of driving what can be the reason?
Could be a bad vacuum advance and some one advanced the timing to get it to idle correctly.Could be restricted water flow in the radiator core. These cars were notorius for over heating when new back in 1965.You might consider placeing a air dam under the bumper frame area to help divert cool air threw the radiator. My 65 mustang is overheating in a short period of driving what can be the reason?
Could be a few things . Ensure the car is adequately supported remove the bolts securing the pads in place, then using a couple of large flat bladed screwdrivers gradually force the pads %26amp; piston back into the calliper ( alternating ends). Discs may require you to remove the calliper assembly with a splined drive socket - size 50 torx ( it did when I changed them on my 406 as the discs will not go over the hubs) If you do the discs as well - about 75-90 minutes per sideHow easy is it to change the break pads on a peugeot 306?
simple enough but you may need certain tools to remove calipers before discs,in order to remove pads find a g clamp to push slowly the pistons back fully put in pads with a small amount of copper grease only on the rear of pads then remove full caliper to remove disc but be careful of just letting it hang by its rubber pipe. How easy is it to change the break pads on a peugeot 306?
Just to add to the first answer re the discs - if they are wearing thin, have a lip all round the outer rim, are badly corroded or scored it is best to replace them at the same time as the pads. Not always easy to get them off without a puller but some do come straight off. refer to Haynes. How easy is it to change the break pads on a peugeot 306?
Wow! Three good answers already.

Only a little to add.

Rotors have a minimum thickness, usually stamped on them.

Your rotors may be able to be skimmed if they have suitable thickness left.

They should have no lips, discolouration, grooves etc

Make sure your replacement pads look identical to the ones on your car before getting too far into the job (ie check as soon as you get a wheel off). You have to flush the heater core seperatly from the radiator, just disconnect both hoses at the fire wall and runa GENTLE stream of water through it in both directions. You will see how much rust and gunk comes out. Might be cheaper in the long run than getting ticketed for dumping and not getting the cooling system properly cleaned which could lead to early system failure. How do I flush the radiator on my 95 Camry?
back flush it.take off the bottom hose and the top hose, open the cap and put a garden hose through the bottom and let it push all the stuff out to the top.Ferminahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13266640240866353648noreply@blogger.com
