I have a 2001 Chevy Cavalier. It has begun running hot in high traffic. It has never done this before so I have gotten worried. I have changed both the radiator cooling fan relay and radiator cooling fan. The relay did nothing. The replacement fan doesn't seem to kick on when the temp. gage reaches half way. When I initially crank my car the fan will turn (this corresponds to me cranking my car) and quickly stop as its momentum slows.

you most likely need a coolant temp sensor, available at any parts store. easy to replace, located near the thermostat housing. it tells the computer what to do in relation to the fan and heat. when it starts to act up, it does what you are describing. replace it for less than 20 bucks and put a smile on your face, cheap fix...Radiator Cooling Fan problem on a 2001 Chevy Cavailer...HELP!!!?
Fix it cheap, by wirering it directly to your power sorce. By eliminating the fan sensor (which is bad), you have the fan on any time the car is running.Radiator Cooling Fan problem on a 2001 Chevy Cavailer...HELP!!!?

the fan is supposed to cut off when traveling faster than the fan can blow, as you slow in traffic the fan will kick on and off, and should continue to run after you cut your vehicle off until it is cooled down, if the thermostat is not opening at the proper time, change the temp of thermostat (example) if your thermostat is a 240 degree, go to the parts store and get a 210 or 220 degree. If this does not help you may have a problem with your head gasket causing the exaust gas to superheat your water before it goes to the radiator, but try the thermostat first.Radiator Cooling Fan problem on a 2001 Chevy Cavailer...HELP!!!?
The builder of the car doesn't turn the radiator fan on until the coolant temperature hits about 230 degrees F
That being said, anytime the AC is on, the fan should be on.
Otherwise, a scanner is required to check the functionality of the fan contol circuits.
If the AC is on and the fan isn't, try tapping the motor with something solid to see if it comes on then. Otherwise, basic electrical diagnostics on the circuits are in order-does it have power and ground, does it come on when power and ground are supplied, etc. Best left to a professional.
